Coaching & reflective practices for people who want to live more deliberately

Rooted in embodiment and death awareness, Wise Mortal is a space where attention becomes discernment.

You can build a meaningful life and still feel estranged from it.

Life has a way of accumulating. Obligations, expectations, a version of yourself that no longer quite fits. At some point you know something has to change.

We live in a culture that measures almost everything except the quality of our own lived experience.

It becomes easy to lose touch with the body that carries us, the longings that persist beneath all the "I shoulds." And the simple fact that our time on this earth is finite.

Why death awareness?

Most people assume it's about preparing for the end. That's part of it.

But remembering that we are finite beings has a way of sifting what matters from what doesn't. What is trivial softens and what has been neglected or postponed becomes harder to ignore.

Death is certain though it is not the focus of this work. Life is — not the life we imagine we'll live someday, but the one already unfolding, here in this very moment.

  • "I was initially hesitant because, as a combat veteran, death is something I've always feared and preferred not to dwell on. The experience turned out to be surprisingly positive. It helped me reflect on the meaningful aspects of my life and reframe my perspective on mortality."

    — Blake D.

  • "At the beginning I was wondering when we were going to address being dead. At the end, I realized the work instead put exclamations on all the ways I wanted to be alive, now. That's a lot more useful."

    — Angela B.

Attention changes what becomes possible.

Over time, you stop overriding yourself. You learn to sit with uncertainty, to let emotions move through rather than fix in place, to trust the wisdom you've been carrying all along.

About

I'm Michelle A M Miller (she/her) — coach, writer and interdisciplinary artist.

In 2021, four members of my family died. Questions I had carried for years became deeply personal. Again and again, I return to one:

What changes when I remember that I will die?

I've found few questions more worthy of a lifetime of attention.

A woman wearing glasses and a dark, pleated top sits at a desk, turning slightly towards the camera. The table has a magazine, pens, and decorative items, with dark wall art in the background featuring intricate, symmetrical gray drawings.

“All you share seems to find a way to help me in ways I wasn't even sure I needed.”
